Spearfishing at Elm Lake

In 2019, my son and I set the goal and accomplished visiting all 13 North Dakota State Parks.  It was a fun experience packed into the 3 months of summer.  We have decided to set a new goal for 2020! In 2020 our goal is to have 20 adventures (primarily in North Dakota) that are new experiences for both of us.  We checked the first one off the list on February 9, 2020!

Last weekend we woke up early and headed down to meet some friends in Ellendale, ND.  Our experience for the day was to go spearfishing at Elm Lake in South Dakota.  Yes, that means our first North Dakota Adventure took us a whole mile into South Dakota!  Regardless of our location we had a great time.  We got on the ice around 9:30 AM.  Our quick adventure was made easy by our hosts who already were setup from the day before.  Within five minutes of arriving I speared my first ever Northern Pike; it measured in at a hair under 12 pounds!  30 minutes later for my son speared an even larger Northern Pike; measuring in at 14 pounds!

Our first-time spearfishing adventure was an absolute blast!  We missed a 3rd fish and headed home after a few hours on the ice.  Spearfishing turned out to be a great experience and more fun than ice fishing!  Seeing fish swimming in the water under the icehouse is a pretty cool experience.  This will definitely be an adventure we’ll look to repeat in future years!

19 adventures to go!
