Fossils, Hiking, and Geocaching

My son and I (along with two of his friends) just wrapped up a quick three-day trip that included a fossil dig in the Pembina Gorge, camping in Lake Metigoshe State Park, and quick visits to Grahams Island State Park and Turtle River State Park.

The fossil dig (through NDGS Paleontology) was a hit with all three kids!  It was a beautiful day that started with a quick educational breakfast followed by a few hours of digging.  We found lots of small fossils and the kids had a great time.  I highly recommend signing up for one of their digs when registration opens (usually in February)…space goes quickly!

We hit the road after lunch and got to Lake Metigoshe by about 3:00 in the afternoon.  We hit the trails for a quick hike, found a geocache, and then hit the lake for quick swim.  After making tacos-in-a-bag over the campfire we wrapped our day with some s’mores.

Our final day involved stops at both Grahams Island State Park and Turtle River State Park for some quick hikes.  A very memorable trip and Lake Metigoshe is now on our short list of our favorite North Dakota State Parks.
